So we’re back at chamber 1 again but this time I am heading in as a different character instead of the Convict, this time I have chosen to try out the Marine. Before jumping into the first chamber though I decide to look for Ox and his mistress who I found previously to see what benefits they may offer.
I find they have set up into a room to the left of the Gungeon entrence that had previously been blocked off, and it appears to be some kind of shop, perhaps it will let me use those credit things you sometimes get in the dungeon to perhaps let me buy items and guns before entering the Gungeon?
On further inspection it lets me donate credits to unlock guns and items, although I am still not entirely sure how it works, I guess I’ll figure it out eventually. Ox also apparently lost an arm, wonder if I can do anything about that… anyway off to the gungeon.
The Marine starts off with an aptly named Marine Sidearm which I hope will be better than the Budget Blaster, but it does say it can fail when most needed so that is not the best sign, but we shall see. He can also call in ammo supply drops which I guess can come in handy and he has a passive item that increases reload speed and weapon accuracy which should be great… now let’s take him for a spin.
I must say I like how the explosive enemies such as the Nitra’s can take out a whole host of enemies if you kill them in the right spot. This increased accuracy of weapons with the Marine thus far is also very good, it helps combat my naturally poor aim.
I must also bring up the moment where I knocked over a brazier and killed a bulletkin…
I must say I like the detail of the Marine’s helmet being blown off when his shield is lost from the health and it also causes a shockwave pushing enemies back,, I am not sure if losing the shield from the health has always caused a mass pushback or if it is unique to the Marine.
I eventually find a chest room after much killing and also getting shot up by those machine gun ghosts which I am really beginning to hate, probably the enemies I hate most in the 1st chamber. The item I get from the chest is a passive item that has a chance of improving healing that I receive, good I guess for someone who is terrible at dodging.
Annoyingly I almost get killed by one of those big sword dudes, they sure do seem to have a lot of health! I now have less than one heart left and I am feeling unconfident now and expecting a possible death soon.
Right after that I come across another chest room and although hoping for health, what I got instead was still interesting… a big meat gun that appears to be very powerful, with its large projectiles bouncing off multiple walls, the almanac also says it makes me move a bit faster, which as we have seen possibly before, could come in handy. I am a little more confident again but would still like health.
Sadly though not soon after I find the Boss room and get promptly defeated by the Gatling Gull boss, once again I face a similar predicament with the meat gun that I did with the gun that shoots guns that shoots bullets, in that it causes a lot of chaos on the screen that can make me lose my character and more easily run into the enemy’s bullets.
I head back in with the Marine for another go.
I utilise explosive barrels in several rooms to annihilate various bulletkin and after then taking down some flying books and a big flail dude I open a chest and find a new gun called the snowballer.
Apparently the gun was invented on the one and only day the gungeon had a snow day. My first impression of the gun is that I like how it can freeze the enemy, very helpful to stop them shooting bullets that I am terrible at dodging!
I find a chest and discover a new active item called the boomerang, which is pretty straight forward and does not seem too interesting, I am unable to test it out though as I have forgotten the key that uses active items. Moving on…
Although I find the boss room I continue on exploring the rest of the floor and also remind myself why I also hate kamikaze enemies as one of them blows me off down into a hole, I get a chest for my efforts though but naturally have no keys to open it so I move on.
To taunt me further the very next room I come across is a chest room, typical. I then head to the big beefy moustache man’s shop in hopes of finding a key.
I find what I seek but also eye up the glass cannon that did me wrong once before by blowing up in my face. I pick up the key and head back for the chest room. The chest contains a shield for the health and also a new gun – the flare gun. It is a single shot and reload which I can’t imagine does so well against a boss so I head to the boss room with snowballer in hand.
Turns out that was a bad decision as the snowballer does terrible damage and ran out of ammo while hardly putting a dent into the Gatling Gull, I should have figured as much, switching to the flare gun actually did do far more damage but it was too little too late, I died.
I decide to save and break, hoping I can make it to the 2nd chamber again next time, and next time I will also use a character I have not used yet, and hopefully figure out how to use action items again.
