Halloween Week Day 6/7 – Fearsome Critters – The Axehandle Hound

The Axehandle Hound is a mischievous Fearsome Critter. A dog-like creature that is often described as having an axe-shaped head and also sometimes an axe handle shaped body. This pesky creature would sneak into Lumberjack logging camps and working areas to do one simple thing – consume their axe handles! Which gives a clear indication for its given name.

A very simple fearsome critter with a very simple diet. If an axe was ever found to be missing its handle, it was blamed on the Axehandle Hound! Being that the creatures were nocturnal they would sneak into the camps or working areas during the night to partake in this annoying behavior. But which can also be described as a curse for the creature, only being able to survive off of a diet of axe handles!

Some stories on this critter also had the Axehandle Hound preferring to consume the wooden handles made of good quality and strong wood, rather than those made using wood that was weaker and of lesser quality. This clearly mirrored the opinion of preferred wood that Lumberjacks liked on their axes. It could also be described as a way to keep Axehandle Hounds away from a camp, by perhaps leaving out axes with low-quality axehandles, while storing away the good quality ones. I would not be surprised if that part was not included in some kind of Axehandle Hound Fearsome Critter stories, told around a fire at a Lumberjack camp.

This one was quite short and sweet as it is probably one of the most simple Fearsome Critters on here and there isn’t really much more to say about it. But that is what makes it an adorable little bundle. Good doggo… or I guess… bad doggo for stealing all the axehandles! But secretly good doggo. Maybe it’s just trying to save the trees and the environment.
