Labour Leadership Election Observations – Circa 13th Janauary

The deadline for MP/MEP nominations are today at 2:30pm and we will be seeing whether Emily Thornberry and Clive Lewis can reach the required 22 backers they need to qualify for the first part of the leadership election.

So far Emily Thornberry sits on 10 backers while Clive Lewis only has four, but is the 2nd candidate to get a 2016 Corbyn backer who have so far rallied around Long-Bailey. So far 68% of MP and MEPs have put forth a nomination for a candidate so Thornberry and Lewis still have a chance to attract the support they need before the deadline, but they will need to hurry with just 3 and a half hours left to go. Note that each candidate also counts as their own backer.

I think it is also pretty obvious to say at this point that Barry Gardiner, who was considering a run, won’t be running. In fact he ditched the notion of running as little as 24 hours after considering it.
