Let’s Read the Wheel of Time – The Eye of the World – Part 2

Remember to read Part 1 first.

Chapter 3 – The Peddler

Alright, so I was wondering what the signifigance of the peddler coming to the village would be – like he just sells stuff right? – but no, it also seems he brings news from afar so maybe we are about to hear some interesting things?

So, apparently winter has been bad in many places and the wolves also a problem. But that there is also war in Ghealdan but I am not sure of the significance of that yet. Ah okay, so apparently the Dragon standard was raised there – but is it the true Dragon or a false one? Also, there have been three false Dragons in the last five years?! Sorry, but did I miss something?

Ah, according to the peddler this Dragon, false or not, is able to use the One Power and channel – apparently the other false Dragons could not?! Huh, interesting if true… so if the false Dragons who could not even channel caused such destruction and chaos who knows what this one could do – again false or not – if they can channel.

I wonder how Rand will continue to weave into the story. I feel like at some point he is going to leave the village and general area where he lives to venture off into the outside and from there become some bigger part of the story? Because for now he is simply just a person experiencing circumstance.

The village certainly has an interesting dynamic with the mayor and the council and the Wisdom and the Women’s Circle. I feel like the Women’s Circle is unusually powerful maybe? At least pretty influential and kind of feels a bit like an intelligence gathering society. Or maybe I’m just thinking too much into it.

Maybe something between Rand and Egwene then? Although she seems quite argumentative. And more talk of seeing the dark rider – and also Perrin – another character who works with the village smith? Saw that rider too and also got a silver coin from Moiraine.

Chapter 4 – The Gleeman

So, this Gleeman has arrived but seems to be getting some pretty unlucky treatment so far. But I wonder why a chapter seems to be dedicated to him? The reason for the Peddler was seemingly to be a way to bring the news of the war and possible False Dragon or Dragon Reborn to the village and reader. But what about the Gleeman? …

So Perrin and Mat were speaking about the furthest they had been out in the area and it seems the Gleeman was inferring some kind of – rude? – joke but I don’t think I am getting it myself. But again that’s just me when it comes to these things – most jokes do not land for me.

There are a lot of famous historical and legendary people in this called Artur, huh? Also Artur Paendrag Tanreall reminds me of Arthur Pendragon. Also I keep hearing references to Aes Sedai having shattered the world once – the Time of Madness? But how much of it is true? I am pretty sure it has not really been gone over yet? There obviously has to be a lot more to it, right?

So, during a little show the Gleeman was putting on Moiraine and Lan turned up to watch as well which has now brought things to a standstill. There was not too much in the exchange though apparently the Gleeman is not fond of Moiraine. But it seems some in the council are not fond of the Gleeman. Huh. Also, it looks like the Wisdom is not too happy with Moiraine and Lan being there either – although Bran disagrees.

Perhaps the Wisdom is not so easily fooled. Bran sounds like someone else Moiraine has wrapped around her finger. I’m speaking as if Moiraine is a bad person – she isn’t – but she also isn’t entirely good either – her attitude for one and how she can look down on people – and how she can USE people easily. If you can tell I still have not fully forgiven Moiraine for how she treated Lan in the last book.

I think it is pretty evident to me at least that the war is already affecting the village – they just don’t know it yet. Surely that black figure is related and also Moiraine and Lan are there – Moiraine being a literal Aes Sedai which none of them have a clue about. It all has to come to a head at some point, surely.

Well, at least it seems the village council are taking things somewhat seriously – putting a patrol in place and all – and they seem to believe the black figure is real even if they have not seen it themselves. But I still can’t help but think something is going to happen that they did not prepare for.

Chapter 5 – Winternight

So, Rand and his father headed back to their farm to ensure it is in a condition they left it – with Tam being concerned the black cloaked figure could have broke in. A valid concern I guess.

They are being very cautious. But all seems just like peacefull farm life for now – although lots of hard work to be done of course. Tam even gets his sword out which Rand did not know he had – so just goes to show how cautious they are being. I feel like Rand will inherit the sword at some point although I hope nothing bad happens to Tam. But I don’t know… things seem too peaceful at the moment.

Crap – I knew it was too peaceful… IS THAT A TROLLOC? Surely not all the way up in the Two Rivers? Isn’t the Blight a long way away? Unless it is some other creature… and more than one of them. Oh boy.

Okay good, Tam is okay. And it seems he can hold his own very well.

He also confirms they were Trollocs. Ah, damn it – I think Tam is injured actually. I hope he will be okay but I feel like he isn’t going to be. And now Rand has the sword as he heads back to the farmhouse to get things to help his father…

There was still a Trolloc alive there and apparently it spoke Rand’s language – although not very well – and tried to deceive him into putting his sword down but luckily he manages to dispatch it – but not before it gave away that the Trollocs would be back again along with something called a Myrddraal (or Fade as Rand called it) which from Rand’s description sounds far more terrifying and dangerous than a Trolloc. I wonder why they are there – what is so important?

Well, at least he got what he needed – hopefully he can get his father back to Emond’s Field and to the Wisdom on time.
