Let’s Read the Wheel of Time – The Eye of the World – Part 6

Remember to read Part 5 first.

Chapter 15 – Strangers and Friends

I think Rand should probably be greatful they didn’t wake him as it is probably a luxary he won’t get often. But I don’t know – I guess he is just an early riser like me and gets grumpy whenever they oversleep.

Huh, dead rats with broken backs in the Inn? Yucky and yikes. I’m guessing there is something more to it and it isn’t the cook’s cat.

Ahhh so they all had that bad dream with the Dark One? Does this mean the Dark One does not know who between them is the Dragon Reborn, then? It would seem to suggest that.

Alright, it seems like that person who I thought might be Siuan last chapter is actually someone called Min. Unless they are using a disguised name but I doubt it as they appear to be nearer to Rand’s age which would not fit in the timeline as we know Siuan is actually closer to Moiraine’s age and Moiraine is quite a bit older than Rand. Still holding out hope Siuan returns! Or I guess in this case it would be appearing for the first time technically.

So Min knows Moiraine as Moiraine seemingly and Min seems to have this ability to see things or signs – or as Moiraine says parts of the ‘pattern’ which we’eve heard before about this ‘pattern’. But she does not seem to be an Aes Sedai herself.

Okay, I mean pretty much anyone can see Rand and Egwene fancy each other we didn’t need her insight for that – I mean if I CAN tell then surely everyone can – but the part where she suggests they are not destined to be together ultimately is interesting I guess but I don’t know.

She also mentions seeing many, many other things on the other folks – probably lots of foreshadowing here but I don’t really have enough to make heads or tails of it.

Huh, this Min person is a little funny and odd. And it seemed she was wrapping Rand around her finger quite easily.

Rand is overwhelemed in Baerlon if I’ve ever seen it and damn do I know what that feels like.

Oh? So the Peddler is alive. But it sounds like he is in a terrible state and why and how is he even in Baerlon? Oof I feel sorry for this guy. He really got the crappy end of the stick in this mess. Pretty much all his livelihood destroyed by the Trollocs. Hopefully Rand can help him – if he’ll even accept help.

So Rand bumped into Mat and then decided to do something quite foolish that almost got Rand in trouble with some Whitecloaks… luckily the Watch arrived to defuse it. But now Rand is clearly apparent to these heretics or whatever. And Rand himself was acting very strangely during it all… is that some of his Dragon Reborn oddity showing through?

Right, I just want to pause this serious scene so someone can take in that poor yellow dog in the alley and look after him in a loving home, thank you.

Well I think it probably is a good idea if they keep quiet about their dream for now. Not that they have not already set events in motion by being foolish with the Whitecloaks I bet… but eh.

Also… the Wisdom from Emond’s Field came? Okay? Damn, seems everyone from Emond’s Field is gonna turn up at this rate, haha.

Chapter 16 – The Wisdom

So, there appears to be a lot of tense things happening right now. Having a bit of trouble following it but Min seems to think they are in even more danger now that the Wisdom has turned up and that ‘she is part of it’ – is she talking about the pattern or did she tell Rand something I’ve forgot? Both are equally possible. Rand seems to be keeping his friends in the dark on it all though but I feel like I am just as in the dark currently, haha.

Moiraine also does not seem too happy that the Wisdom has somehow found them.

Ah, so it seems the Wisdom is very good at tracking, even able to keep up despite Lan’s own skills of covering tracks. She says she is one of the best trackers in the Two Rivers – apart from Tam – thanks to her father. And she is wondering why Moiraine is taking the boys away. I guess that makes sense.

Damn, Thom saying it as it is to the Wisdom, that’s fair and she was even a little bit scared of him for a moment. Makes me wonder more about Thom – are there things we do not know about him? But yeah, the Wisdom needs to be made to understand that it is safer for Emond’s Field and the Two Rivers for the boys not to return.

This Wisdom is very stubborn and a bit annoying. She really does not realise the danger it seems. I wonder what Moiraine is going to do…

I mean the Wisdom is far from stupid. It seems she does believe that the boys would bring danger to the village but at the same time she does not trust Moiraine as she is an Aes Sedai. So, again, I guess that’s fair enough. I just wonder what part she has to play in it all as Min said earlier.

Also the subject of if any of the boys were born outside of the Two Rivers was asked by Moiraine and although the Wisdom did not disclose to Moiraine that Rand was born outside of it – she basically did confirm it to him afterwards – although she did not say that Tam was not his father – whether she does not know that he isn’t or does know but won’t tell Rand is tough to say.

Chapter 17 – Watchers and Hunters

Damn, they’re all having a grand all time listening to stories of hunters, singing, and dancing in this chapter so far. Who is the strange, scarred man though… they clearly aren’t highlighting him for nothing.

Ah so that man is a Whitecloak spy apparently. Not exactly the best spy if he is making himself stand out like that… a good spy would probably join in the dancing and singing and look natural… as if he were having a good time. Ah, whatever. Rand is probably regretting messing with them earlier now at least.

Ooof, the Wisdom, Moiraine, and Egwene sharing a room at the inn? Sounds like a tinderbox ready to explode.

Okay! So the Myddrrall or Fade has somehow found them. It just appeared in the inn like that? It’s a very creepy being, isn’t it? Going after Rand first. Seems it also has the ability to fade away… so the name Fade makes sense. Guess they’ll be leaving right this instant then.

The innkeeper is probably not going to handle things too well while they’re gone by the sounds of it. And this Mutch guy – I’m guessing he had something to do with maybe giving away where they were – is he a darkfriend or just petty? And also… the Wisdom is joining the gang. Even more tension being added when there was already enough… haha.

Speaking of this Governor fellow we’ve not actually met him have we… who are they?

Oh great… the Whitecloaks coming in to bar their way out of Baerlon at the worst possible time. Hate these idiots. Great, and now Bornhald has recognised Rand. Looks like Moiraine is going to have to reveal herself as an Aes Sedai now to save themselves.

Damn, what kind of crazy weaving did she do to achieve that? Stepping over the gate as if she were a giant? How odd!

Ahh, so the Inn is being burned down, Moiraine was right. Of course the Wisdom is going at her for not doing anything about it but I am still with Moiraine on this one – in the long-term it’s a smarter plan. It would be madness to go back and help now. Moiraine tried to warn the innkeeper after all and he did not listen. Besides, Moiraine will help however she can – just not by being silly about it.
