I am a big foodie, everyone I know knows that simple fact about me, I love good food, I love most food, from the basic to advanced meal, a good breakfast, lunch and dinner is a big part of my life and pretty much everyone else’s life as well, or at least, eating a meal in general as some may choose to skip breakfast or vice-versa. But eating is a very important part of our lives nonetheless so it is always important to make it worthwhile and it does not always mean going all out fancy, even the most basic meals can be enjoyable.
And so today I am going to go over my top 5 favourite meals, exclusively in the dinner category.
Number 5 – Toad in the Hole
A toad in the hole, a peculiar name for a dish, is simple in its nature, it consists of 3-4 sausages cooked into a Yorkshire Pudding batter, alone it is large enough to be its own meal, but I often also like to have mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables or sweetcorn alongside it, topping it all off with gravy over the whole lot. Alongside all of that it is a pretty large meal that leaves me more than satisfied afterwards, so if you are feeling especially hungry for something very filling that can easily just be stuck in the oven without prep (unless you want to make your own toad in the hole) then this is definitely the way to go.
The origin of the meals strange name comes from as early as the 1700s where the meal was originally created by poorer people using cheaper meats or meats that had been left over from a previous meal in an attempt to save on money, the name came about as a “vulgar” name to the dish according at least to Wikipedia, so if that is the case then it was most likely a jape at what the poor did by those more wealthy. But now a days the name is just common usage for the meal and is no longer vulgar in nature, if it ever was originally.
All I know is that it is a damn fine meal.
Number 4 – Fish & Chips
Obviously, I had to include Fish and Chips on the list, one of the best take-out meals ever thought up. For me not much beats picking up a piece of Rock Eel and chips at the local “Chippy”. It all comes together as one with both the fish and its batter being a big part of the meal and often the Chippy’s aren’t stingy with chips so you can get quite a big serving that’d often last over to be used in another meal.
I also like both Cod and Haddock as well, the meat is just so delicate and tender with them, so flavourful with the batter. Some people also like vinegar and tomato sauce and all that alongside their chippy take out but for me I just put on a bit of salt and get on with it, not really a fan of the sauces/dressings unless it’s a burger, because a burger by itself is just too dry! But due to fish being so tender you don’t get a dry problem either way.
I also like crustaceans as a little snack too, scampi being my favourite.
Number 3 – Sausage & Onion Pie
I first took a liking to this during my time in college when it would sometimes be an option in the college meals, it was one of the biggest dinners they had, which is probably why they didn’t do it every week. The pie consists of a large slab of sausage meat stuffed with onions and cooked into a pie crust, you’d get mashed potatoes and broccoli alongside it as part of the meal along with gravy as a topper, so again, this meal similar to Toad in the Hole would feel you up easy.
Meat pies all around are for sure always a good meal, but this specific meat pie is king out of all of them in my opinion, I plan to make my own home-made Sausage and Onion Pie one day.
Number 2 – Burrito or Enchilada
I have made my own Burrito’s and Enchilada’s many times normally with a side of loaded nachos, the mixture of flavour in all of this that includes spiced meat, kidney beans, sour cream, guacamole and more makes it a very enjoyable and filling meal.
It is even better when going to a Mexican restaurant and having it made for you by chefs who know what they are doing! But all round, Mexican food is always good, full of spice and flavours.
Number 1 – Chicken & Oyster Sauce Stir-Fry
I came to like this when me and my mum decided to go to a Thai restaurant near to where I live, the tender chicken and firm crunchy vegetables mixed in with rice and oyster sauce is a very delicious combination, we liked it so much that my mum even bought some Woks so we could make our own Chicken and Oyster Sauce Stir-Fry.
I’ve never tried actual oysters before and I know my mum does not like them, but the sauce is a different experience, so if you don’t like oysters it does not necessarily mean you won’t like Oyster sauce, so give it a try!
