The California Governor Recall Vote

Hey all. As usual at the moment I am still busy studying on the Google IT Course and still busy in the middle of moving, it is now looking like me and my brother will not be in our new place until at least October due to some more set backs, such as gas and electric meters in the house needing to be reformatted so they will work with a Smart Meter. But once that is done we should finally be able to begin properly moving over.

But with every thing going on at the moment it is hard to find time to write-up many posts for this blog at the moment, but I am hoping by around the end of October I may be able to get a normal schedule back in place for this blog again.

But there is a Governor Recall vote in California today so I thought I may talk about that a bit today, as I do find these things interesting.

I have been keeping track of the polls more than the actual news to do with the recall, so I have done some research to put together this short post. From what I can gather from the polls I have seen on the recall, it seemed at first the recall was close but now it is looking like a surge for keeping the Governor Gavin Newsom in place has come about.

So I would say that now it is very likely that Gavin Newsom will be retained as California’s Governor at this point, the polls would have to be drastically wrong otherwise, if Newsom does end up getting recalled it would certainly be one of the biggest upsets since 2016.

I think there are several likely reasons for why the recall has faltered for those who have called it, one of which is that COVID-19 has calmed down somewhat currently in California at least, and restrictions have been mostly lifted, and as we know anger over COVID-19 restrictions and mandates, and related job losses and business closures were some of the main reasons the Recall petition succeeded, although it had originally been launched on issues to do with high taxes and homelessness. Since COVID-19 restrictions are no longer as big of an issue currently, then one would expect that momentum to recall Newsom over it would decrease.

But I do not think that is the only reason momentum for the recall side has faltered. As we saw in Texas recently the big news was all about abortion after the state legislature put tougher restrictions on getting an abortion, and of which the Supreme Court decided not to challenge, which scared many Democrats deeply. I think this is another reason why the ethusiasm to retain the Democrat Governor in California has increased, as the strongly Democratic state does not want to see its own abortion rights potentially targeted if a Republican Governor did happen to be installed by the recall election.

Another reason is that many Democrats do not want to see a hardcore Republican take over the helm of the Governorship for one of the most Democratic states in the US. If the recall were to succeed it is likely the new Governor would be a controversial Conservative radio host Larry Elder, someone who would not fit in well at all to blue California’s political environment, and could cause all sorts of issues for the state’s progressive democratic agenda. It is easier for Democrats to be galvanised against someone who they would perceive as such a road-block to their state’s Democratic-party political balance, and also someone who is perceived as a Trump-like figure.

Elder also faces several controversies and accusations that have since dogged his campaign and likely galvanised more democrats to vote in the recall election, and maybe even decreased Republican enthusiasm in the recall vote as well.

Such allegations have included those of abuse in a former relationship, which may have included brandishing a gun in a threatening manner, and also that he has been accussed of sexual assault in the past as well, this being revealed by Elder himself, with him even making fun of one of the accusations.

So as can be seen there are many reasons why the recall will likely no longer succeed and so it would seem we will not be seeing another repeat of the 2003 recall, which is not really even comparable to this one anyway. Some Republicans, especially those seen as favourable to Trump still, have already begun claiming that election rigging is taking place in the recall vote, and Elder himself has not committed to accepting the results of the recall.

Thank you for reading this quick post I made on the California Recall Vote, I do like making posts like this and wish I had more time to do it. Hopefully soon though!
