The Coronavirus Effect, Don’t Assume People with Autism are Enjoying this Period

It is without a doubt at this point that the coronavirus has led to a major change in pretty much everyone’s daily life and means we are now all facing different ways of having to do things and missing out on some of the things that were a usual part of our routine – which for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder can be a massive upset for them and extremely stressful. Of course, though ultimately the measures in place are worth it to slow the spread and prevent mass infections and protect the vulnerable while we look for treatments and a vaccine.

Many might think that the drawing down of social interaction as a result of the Coronavirus is something people with Autism may very much enjoy due to coming into contact with less people, but this does not mean just because of that one thing we are all happy about it, as already mentioned our routines are massively disrupted and also not everyone with Autism gets distressed in social situations as much as say another person with Autism, those who are into a social life are then, as everyone else, also being disrupted.

Even for me, someone who is at home most the time anyway, it has had a big impact on my routine, such as not being able to visit my mum on Friday’s currently and also the disruption and changing of the dates of the US Primary elections that I was tracking and also the pushing back a year of the UK Local and Mayoral Elections, all of which have been quite big disruptions to my blogging routine as well.

So, I have found that fairly stressful. As well as that I have found myself becoming somewhat depressed the longer this draws on for due to all those dying and all the news being focused on it 24/7, I am beginning to miss the news how it used to be, where many other things that happened were shown and highlighted, but of course due to all the lockdowns and shutdowns, not much else is happening, so really that is another major disruption of one of my big interests – in the news and general politics.

So, the meme that all people with Autism must be enjoying this time simply isn’t the case in the majority of circumstances, sure there are some introverted people out there who are enjoying this period (that is fine), but that is not everyone with Autism.

To all those truly effected by this terrible pandemic (such as if someone you know or are related to are ill from the disease, or worse that someone you know or love has died), I very much am sorry and wish you the best of luck. Just remember that we should all continue following the advice and orders that our governments and the World Health Organization are giving, so for everyone in the UK that means staying inside! (Unless you fit into one of the few categories that are reasons for being out), but other than that… STAY INSIDE!
