The Iowa Caucus is happening today where we will have the first indication of who the possible big-hitting Democratic candidates will be, although we already have a general idea from polling and general popularity of candidates, we have very little clue of who will actually win in this Caucus, as polls have been very close and a bit all over the shop.
As well as that caucuses are all in all very hard to predict due to the nature of how they work, where people gather together in many precincts, and gather into groups to indicate support for a candidate, which will change up as people decide to change their minds or switch from a candidate who is out due to being under the threshold, or by trying to attract others to their candidates to try and get them back above the line again.
Make sure to check out my post on how Primaries and Caucuses work here and how they are both different from one another.
So far it appears the top candidates are Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren. Any one of them could easily win but polls indicate that overall it will either be Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden getting in a narrow win, but again, it’s all to play for, even candidates lower down such as Amy Klobuchar have been given a chance of a shock win, with some polls giving her a sudden surge. Keep in mind though that delegates are divided proportionally based on how each candidate placed.
Although it is only the first of many Caucuses and Primaries to go, it will be the first big test for all the standing candidates and may make some of the lower polling candidates such as Tulsi Gabbard and Andrew Yang consider if continuing on is still worthwhile if they perform as expected by the polls.
Often the winner of the first test will receive a visible boost in polling for future caucuses and primaries as well. So although it may seem like a blip on the long journey yet, it is still a very important first step in that journey towards the Democratic Presidential Nomination for all the candidates involved.
I will continue to cover the primaries and caucuses from here on out as best I can, so make sure to stick around, subscribe for e-mail notifications below or use an RSS feed reader to keep track with my latest posts.
