Me and my sister have begun (and now finished) watching Harry Potter, I have already seen all the movies dozens of times over but my sister had only seen the first two (although she has read most of the books). I have also read the books, but much more recently, I have all the books in my room, with fantastic art illustrations on the covers, reading them after already seeing the movies many times over brought back its magic in a way I never expected.
The books deliver so much more content that you didn’t know about as well as stuff they decided to cut out of the movies, you learn so much more on the background of characters, so much more on the lore of the Wizarding World and also explains the workings of many things you may have found off in the movies… for example… how do the Muggles not see all of those wizards and witches just magically going through to Platform 9 and three quarters?! It’s all explained along with much, much more! Also… Peeves! I still wonder why that mischievous poltergeist was never included in any of the movies, at least a few times. But to be fair, movies have a budget, movies are constricted, they have their limits and the people who make them have to make tough decisions on what to keep and what to axe or at least, lesson. For example, the ghosts were included in the movies, but their roles were significantly reduced compared to that of the books.
That’s why I always find most of the time that the books are much better, at least in learning more of the lore and getting a lot more engrossed in the stories as books don’t have any of the restrictions that movies and TV Shows have, but that doesn’t mean the movies are bad though, seeing such a magical world come to life on screen is also amazing. But the books really give you all that extra information that allows you to piece things together and learn so much more about the world, characters and magic.
I started reading the books during the time I was in college and for someone with Autism, I found college to be a rough time, I actually hated it, mostly all the social interaction, rowdy class-mates and being very bored during the break and lunch times which I wished didn’t exist, all I wanted was to eat lunch and go straight back to lessons to just get it over and done with. Harry Potter at the time was an escape from all that, throwing myself into the world in the books and just losing myself, forgetting that I would be going to college the next day. I’d even think about the books while at college, giving myself something to get myself through the harsh college day.
So, I ultimately became fairly depressed upon eventually finishing the books, as it feels like you have gone through so much of the world, got to know so many of the characters and then it, as all things eventually do, comes to an end. It’s like a longing and/or missing depression, wishing it could somehow go on, but of course that would be foolish, it started great and ended as it should have. Sometimes if things are made to go on longer than they should they end up becoming sloppy and poor. The same thing happened after I finished X-Files and the same thing happened after I finished Game of Thrones, among others, a comedown depression. It’s a big come down. But the Wizarding World still goes on, although the Harry Potter arc has finished. That the Wizarding World is still going keeps me happy, learning more through Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, learning more on Pottermore and also planning to go to the Harry Potter Studios. It is as Dumbledore said – “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
Of course, with all my interests into the paranormal and within fantasy and thinking beyond it is no wonder I love the Wizarding World. As well as that, I have always viewed myself as someone who doesn’t fit in well with normal society, so of course I am attracted to stranger alternatives.
And now of course let’s pay tribute to Harry Potter’s greatest and bravest hero… (aside from his Mother)
