The Mysteries of Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is found in Russia’s Siberia region and is the deepest lake in the world and the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, it is so big that the combined North American Great Lakes are still shallower in comparison. Overall, the lake is the 7th largest in the world by surface area and is considered the oldest lake in the world.

The lake which is nestled between Irkutsk Oblast and the Buryat Republic in the mountainous region of Southern Siberia in Russia is also a tourist attraction for activities such as hiking trails, exploring, ice-walking, ice-skating, ice-fishing, ice-eating (just kidding! Unless of course you want to eat some ice, no one’s stopping you…), wildlife spotting and even diving in the lake itself. But many of these tourists likely don’t consider some of the strange and unusual happenings at Lake Baikal, some of which can be quite terrifying and may scare them off of the site. Although I am also sure there may be some people who even travel to the lake in an attempt to witness some of the more paranormal-sides of things, such as UFOs, aliens and other mysteries.

Paranormal and unexplained incidents have happened both above the lake and even within the lake itself under the water!

Strange lights and UFO activity have been reported over and around the lake by locals, even including reports of UFO’s lowering down from the sky and floating on the lake and UFOs shooting up out from the water and also alleged accounts of witnessing unexplained submersible objects or USO’s moving under the water – which by the way is one of the many reasons I am scared of going into large bodies of water, because you just don’t know what might be down there.

USO’s are less commonly reported than the much more famous counterpart- the UFOs – probably because everyone is able to see the sky rather than large bodies of water or the sea and most people don’t really bother looking under the water when they are around large lakes or the oceans and seas and a number of them are even too murky to do so anyway.

USO’s are often able to also fly up out of the water and become a UFO indicating that such crafts are very advanced. Some USO’s have also been witnessed dropping things into the ocean or large bodies of water, which potentially could be USO-only objects or something that is doing…something?! To the water. Some even suggest that aliens maintain secret well-hidden underwater bases, which is pretty extreme. Others believe that USO’s are simply just top-secret experimental military vehicles.

Sightings of unexplained USO activity has been reported by witnesses on or near the lake. One account comes from a man who worked as a rescuer called Vyacheslav Lavretevich who was interviewed by NTV. The man said he was in a yacht on Lake Baikal when all of a sudden, a huge glowing disk flew out from under them, out of the lake, blinding them for a moment as it flew into the sky.

Another incident from an NTV interview with a man called Oleg Chichulin, said that he was training students near Cape Svyatoi Nos when they saw a strange glowing ball in the sky, which faded and then turned into a red glowing ball. The red ball sat on the lake and very slowly begun to sink, until it was completely submerged and gone.

There is even an alleged lake monster in Baikal often called either the Lusud-Khan or Usan-Lobson Khan which roughly translates to meaning “Water dragon monster” and has been part of the lakes folklore since ancient times where petroglyphs on the cliffs around Baikal by ancient natives have depicted such large creatures not known to officially exist in Lake Baikal and early explorers from China even referred to them as “lake gods”.

Some locals believe such cryptids exist in Lake Baikal and can be witnessed on rare occasions but there has been nothing solid or defining captured of such creatures.

These petroglyphs didn’t just depict a strange lake creature thought but also appears to depict strange alien beings, some of which appear to be wearing helmets of some kind, perhaps indicating these aliens, if they are that, went under water.

There have been numerous reports of UFOs in the area, one such report comes from a woman called Valery Rudentsov in the village of Kurma, telling of her account to the NTV channel on 16th May 1990, it happened on 17th April 1987 when she was with 12 other people at about 12:20am. She said that one of the guys from the group went into the yard and only seconds later ran back in and called everyone outside where he then pointed at a huge object in the sky.

The woman said it was a huge flying saucer about 150 meters up and from its center was a phospherent purple ray the edges of the object had yellow portholes. She said the diameter of the flying saucer was 70 meters and it hung in the sky for a long time, making no sound whatsoever. The object would slowly start moving away and disappear behind the hills of Olkhon.

Another interview by NTV was done with the chairman of the Union of Photographers of Buryatia called Sergey Konechnykh who claims a UFO sighting in the area on 9th July 2009 at about 10pm. The man described being out on a balcony with his son to watch the sunset. He said suddenly there were two glowing lights that hovered over the lake, he also took pictures of the encounter which appear to show two-yellow-reddish/orange lights glowing in the night sky. The pictures, including others, can be seen here.

There have been strange incidents that have happened under the water of Lake Baikal. One such incident happened in 1977 when a scientific research submersible called the Paysis was 1,200 meters below the dark depths of Lake Baikal when they turned off their spotlight and sat in the pitch black eerie deep water, during this time there would suddenly be an inexplicable unknown source of external light that enveloped the submersible for several seconds before flickering out. The source of the light has never been explained.

This isn’t all either as there has been alleged contact with aliens or unknowns under the water as well which apparently caused deaths and injuries of Soviet Navy divers. It included the divers encountering strange humanoid creatures underwater in 1982 during a training exercise. They were described as very tall, giant-like, wearing silvery suits and head-gear but no visible breathing-apparatus.

Upon being ordered to pursue them three of the divers were killed and four of them were seriously injured, as the underwater aliens defended themselves apparently using a weapon able to shoot out powerful sonar waves that sent the divers flying out the water, causing severe decompression sickness. This incident was documented into classified files by the Soviets and was later revealed by Russian executives and spread by the media along with many other strange incidents, a number of which happened in or around Lake Baikal.

One incident that isn’t officially documented anywhere else claims the crashing of a TU-104 into Lake Baikal after it was allegedly chased by a UFO, claims come from the pilot and also people on the ground who witnessed the event, but with no other official documentation anywhere to be found it can be hard to believe, is it possible that the Soviets were able to cover this up so well?

There have also been unexplained disappearances of boats on the lake. One such incident occurred in June of 2011 when a boat called the Yamaha left from a village in Kabansk, Buryatia with four crew to test out a new motor; they were never seen again. The average person would likely conclude that the new motor was somehow faulty and had caused the boat to sink in some way. There was also thick fog at the time but the other conditions were fine and contact with the boat was lost soon after the fog appeared. Searches since have turned up no wreckage or clues, with the boat seemingly having just vanished into thin air. Locals have claimed that vicious whirlpools can sometimes inexplicably appear in certain parts of Lake Baikal from time to time, which can drag down boats, although this has never been proven.

So just what the heck is going on in this big old lake?
