The Paranormal Alphabet – F – The Irish Fetch

Welcome back to another edition of the paranormal alphabet where we have reached F, of which I have chosen the Fetch. The Fetch is a type of spirit from Irish folklore and you are likely to know when you have seen one as it will look exactly like you, it is your exact doppelganger. Although it is possible that you can witness a Fetch of someone else, most commonly someone you know, such as a close friend or family member.

It is often regarded as a death omen of whoever the Fetch looks like, meaning they are either dying or about to die or perhaps have already died very recently. Although some sources claim that seeing a Fetch in the morning instead of the evening can instead be a good omen of long life for the person the Fetch is shaped from.

The Fetch will usually be distant and not very interactive and have been reported to either look like a normal healthy version of the person it is imitating or it bores scars, injuries or looks related to the way the person it looks like has died or how they are going to die. So, for example if the person has died in a crash the Fetch may look pretty battered.

The Fetch or variants of it have been used many times throughout pop-culture in movies, books and TV shows. There are two episodes from the X-Files that have used this kind of Spirit, for example when Scully’s father dies, she sees a vision of him on her chair, despite knowing he had left, leaving her confused, although this was a little different as it was revealed to be a dream, but her father still died.

The other episode is where a man with special needs who worked at a bowling alley kept seeing the apparitions of those who were being killed, which also included the injuries they had sustained on the double. Mulder also actually mentions the Fetch in this episode as well, as a possibility, among other paranormal entities and phenomena. Also, in this episode, people who saw these doubles, were also bound to see death soon as well, even if it wasn’t their own double, for example the owner of the bowling alley also saw what the special needs man saw and he eventually died of a heart attack—of which was also witnessed by the guy with special needs in apparition form.

The Fetch can also be compared to the Germanic Doppelganger, which was a double of a person, either paranormal or not, of which was also usually an omen of bad luck, with the double also often described as being evil or mischievous. The Fetch appears to mostly be entirely residual though, which differentiates it from the Doppelganger, which is described as living in the moment and of free will and able to interact intelligently with its surroundings and other people and it isn’t always a death omen like the Fetch often is.
