Hello all. I had a great time at Thorpe Park last week and I did my first ever job interview today. Now I am getting ready to chill out for the weekend. But when we get some free time sometimes we do not know what to do. Let’s take a look…

A Niche Game
Last week I came across an interesting game that I had never heard of before. This game is known as Space Station 13 and I decided to check it out. It is hard to sum it up in one go but I’ll try:
It is an online multiplayer game which often includes roleplaying (where you pretend to be your actual character you make and not yourself) where you choose a profession and work to try and keep a space station going for as long as possible while antagonists try and cause as much havoc as possible. You could say it’s like a super complex version of Among Us except that Space Station 13 came out way before that.
The above does not really do it any kind of justice so I suggest anyone that finds that interesting should do some deeper digging on it, including looking at wikis for any servers you plan to join so you know the DOs and DO NOTs. But the game can lead to many hilarious hijinks and is a great time waster when you have nothing to do, the discovery aspect is one of the especially fun things about it, as well as funny interactions. Although it may take you a while to learn the mechanics and complexities I’d say it is worth it when you have nothing better to do.
I myself literally have no idea what I am doing but I am still enjoying it and plan to play more this weekend.
Beat my High Score?
Or instead if you want another time waster go to a website called human benchmark. It includes a bunch of basic little tests/games that when you complete assigns a percentile to you based on how well you did compared to the average on that particular game/test.
My favourite game/test on there is the verbal memory one where my current high score is 123 – try to beat it perhaps? Apparently it is a very good score (80-90 percentile or something like that).
Other ones I like are the chimp test and the sequence memory which I am pretty good at.
Ones I am not so good at…? Aim trainer and reaction time… and for some reason visual memory.
Do some Coding?
If you are interested in learning some coding or programming languages like I am you can check out some of the resources I have been using like FreeCodeCamp, CodeAcademy and CodePen. Note that they are helpful for getting started and familliar with such languages but if you really want to start getting good you should set yourself a goal/project of coding/programming something.
You can look across Youtube for a JavaScript (or other language) project to do and there are also blogs out there as well that give suggestions.
Downloading and using Visual Studio Code to your desktop is all you need to use pretty much any programming language or framework. Once you get more confident you can check out GitHub and look for developers who are requesting help on their own projects – even more experience and better yet… CV (or resume) applicable experience.
Stackoverflow is also another good community resource to ask for help on programming/coding related stuff if you’re stuck on something.
This is all what I am currently looking into anyway! Why not learn something new if you have the time and interest in it? I plan to do some future blogposts on some of the things I learn in this area.
Maybe something on there got you deciding what you want to do at the weekend… or not. Simply watching a TV series, movies, podcasts or reading books is also great during free time.
Next week I will probably do a similar post to this but focus on some useful links to websites I have found handy/fun that I have collected.
Have a good weekend.
