Back in one of our previous houses, which was part of my childhood and where we lived for like a year or two, which in my opinion was probably our best ever house due to it being completely detached, the largest house we’ve ever had, with a good-sized front garden, driveway and back garden and we also had a fancy shed built in the garden as well. One of our neighbors also used to have parrots in the garden next to us and we could often hear them talking.
Anyway, enough on that, today I am here to talk about something else the house also had, which was a small pond which when we arrived was all murky and disgusting and my mum was originally planning to get it removed and replace it with a patio area to sit at. This never ended up happening though as one day we started (me and my brother) using nets and buckets in the pond in an attempt to catch something and catch something we did… a frog!
We had never really seen frogs up close before so it was really cool and we also held them as well, they were about as large as both our hands combined and also of course slimy, they would not struggle or anything, although they would begin moving when they wanted to be put down again, sometimes I’d place my hands out over the pond so they would leap back in again. There were quite a few frogs in the pond and we did name a few of them, one with the thoughtful name of Froggy (can’t remember any other names).
Due to me and my brother liking the pond so much my mum never ended up replacing it with a patio and so we had many good times looking at and holding the frogs and fishing them out with nets from time to time. We also got to see all of the tadpoles during the right season and then all the tiny baby frogs that came along from that, so small they could fit entirely on the tip of your finger, they would swarm over the entire garden and you had to be careful where you stood, eventually the baby frogs would latch on to their parents back until they decided to become independent.
At some point we decided to clear the pond up as we wanted to get pond fish, and that means we had to part ways with the frogs and so we fished them out and took them to a new lake elsewhere, where they would be safe. Then the pond was completely cleaned out and given fresh clear water and also a pond filter to keep it clean. Then we got a bunch of large pond fish, I believe most of them were Koi or some sort of similar variety (not an expert so not sure) and there was also this one strange fish, it was flat and would shimmy along the sides of the pond, we always just called them “sucky fish”, I already talked about how one of our dogs fished it out once, (don’t worry it was safely retrieved and returned to the pond without injury).
Of course eventually we had to move out and so since we’d be going to a new home without a pond we had to part ways with the pond fish, I am not entirely sure if the new owner kept them or if we took the pond fish to someone else before we moved.
Pond fish are not the only fish we have had though, we also had a fish tank with small tropical fish in it for a long while, which we had first got in the previous house before we moved to the larger house, although we no longer have them now, but I will talk about our tropical fish another time if I have not already talked about it before in length.
