Coronavirus Woes – Keeping Entertained and Sane

Even though we are beginning to slowly come out of lockdown in a number of places I suspect we are still in this for the long haul, especially considering some places such as in China and South Korea are seeing upticks in coronavirus cases again now that they have lifted some restrictions so we can only assume this is likely going to happen anywhere else where lockdowns are reduced as well. I guess we can’t realistically expect to be safe until a vaccine comes along which will likely take over a year’s time.

It is what it is unfortunately but that doesn’t mean that people won’t be upset, annoyed and depressed by the situation, it’s only natural. Nothing normal is really happening at the moment and it has been like this for around about 3ish or so months now, so the prospect that it’s also going to be like this through a large part if not all of the Summer and beyond is not too long of a shot and quite daunting.

I do really miss the typical routine of life, such as the usual track of news and a number of the events that I usually watch have been cancelled or at least greatly altered, as has been the case for so many others. There isn’t much getting away from it, you see it on TV, the news, even in adverts and it feels like it’s never going to end and that nothing new in the normal flow will even happen again.

But it will end eventually, nothing lasts forever and pandemics in the past have shown us that they do eventually run their course. We just have to keep patient and sensible and not let it degrade us and not have the situation make us do drastic things that can make the situation worse again. Everyone working together is what will fix this the fastest, everyone doing their little part to socially restrict and follow expert guidelines will lead to us defeating the virus or at least holding it off from society’s vulnerable people until a vaccine is developed. We can’t give in just yet and think “oh well, so what if I don’t follow the guidelines, I’m only a single person among millions” … as it only takes one person to set it off again or a single person to inadvertently infect someone vulnerable to the disease, we have to also keep in mind that many people with the disease are asymptomatic and so might not even know they’re spreading it. It takes just one. So, it’s best to be safe and responsible and remain at home and following the guidelines.

So, we have to find ways to entertain ourselves in the safety of our homes while this continues on. I have personally been playing a lot more games lately, going back to games I have finished, but heading for the 100% completion by doing the side parts, one such lately is New Super Mario Bros. On the Wii U where I have been collecting all the star coins and unlocking the levels on world 9. My blogging has also helped keep me satisfied and sane. You can also try and find something new to occupy your time on Netflix or some other streaming service or even try something new such as subscribing to a newspaper or other service on the internet and checking out their content. Keeping in touch with any friends you may have can also be important via online video calls or social medias, just having a typical conversation on an online chat with them, one you’d usually perform in-real-life with them instead can be a way to get in that social itch you may need to scratch.

You could even try going back to a hobby you may have tried picking up but left to get dusty as so many of us do… that piano-board you bought to become the world’s best Pianist? Get back to it! All your art stuff sitting in a cupboard somewhere? Try drawing or painting something! Or you could download an application on your computer or tablet device that you can use to practice doing a bit of digital art. You could even try learning some of a language? There are a number of applications that let you do it, such as Duolingo which I have been using lately to learn some French. Read a book or even download an ebook on your tablet. Make an exercise schedule, maybe you have some instructor DVDs lying around and even if you don’t there are plenty of routines you can find and follow on Youtube for free, doing exercise not only makes you healthier but also releases chemicals that make you feel happier and less depressed. Get into watching a content creator on a platform such as Youtube or Twitch TV!

In this digital age and world there are plenty of things we can still do from the comfort of our own home to keep ourselves happy and entertained, you just need to have the effort to try and get yourself into it, don’t let your down mood control you, the best thing you can do is throw yourself into something and don’t look back. It’s important to maintain our sanity during these times and so drawing up a timetable of things to do in your house also can’t hurt, I’m sure there’s a number of things you’ve continually put off that you could be doing right now in your home. Also if you are living with a number of people and the stress and tension is getting high, try and work out a consensus and implement boundaries in the house that all agree with, such as chill out zones and agreements on who does what and when, the last thing you want to happen in a house during a lockdown is to end up being at each other’s throats, so it can be important to just sit down and talk and figure out what’s best for each individual and come to the ultimate compromise of what works best for everyone’s sanity. It may sound crazy, but these are crazy times we are in, fight fire with fire.

And if you are one of the many essential workers or people who have been giving the go ahead to go back to work, you’re all heroes for doing your part to keep the essential parts running for us all. Keep safe!
