Enter the Gungeon #4 – Mild Despair

Previous part.

And here I am again ready to face up against the second chamber again, Gungeon Proper… can I do it properly this time? There’s going to be a lot of bad puns becuase that’s all you can really do to try and be funny in a blogpost.

In the first room I am already faced with a new enemy, some kind of gellatin cube that fires a ton of bullets in a diamond/square shape all across the room and alongside getting harassed by a bulletkin I take lots of damage.

I am unsure what the cube-thing was as it didn’t come up in the almanac but I wonder if it was related to the bubulon. Sadly I took much damage in the room as I once again fumbled with forgetting controls and also panicing, I am terrible at multi-tasking.

Then down into a much larger room I come across another new enemy, something that shoots bullets in various patterns and also smiley faces, somehow managing to dodge all its bullets I take it out with my trusty laser trident.

It turns out both of those new enemies were related to the bubulon, respectively a cubulon and chancelon, other troops of the great bubulonian empire. I thus also discover that you have to kill an enemy for the first time before it appears in the almanac. At some point I also apparently took out a Cardinal without realising.

After fighting apprentice gunjurers and bullats in the next room I desperatly need some health and luckily I come upon the shop right after, I shot my gun in the shop several times causing the beefy moustache man to pull out his huge double barreled shotgun, I can only imagine if I shoot one more time he will attack me, which I can’t afford right now.

I buy the full heart and the beefy moustache man, still pointing his big gun at me, angrily states he should have tripled the prices. I do like the emotional detail that has been invested into this clearly not so simple shop keeper. I also wonder if it is possible to kill the shop keeper and if you get anything for it, but I hold back as I do not need any more trouble right now.

Not that it matters much, as I meet my 6th death to a veteran shotgun kin. Man O’ man are these bulletkin getting more sophisticated and difficult, there were even these new sniper bullet kin, harbouring ominous laser point sights.

I am pretty sad to lose my laser trident as it was probably the best gun I have had so far but alas, we are probably going to have many, many more deaths before we really get anywhere. I eagerly hit the quick restart button.

I fight my way through more bulletkin, apprentice gunjurers, flying books, birds that belch egg bullets and the cowardly guy that buffs other nearby enemies.

As I fight my way through famalliar enemies including the big bullet sword and whip dudes I start realizing I am actually getting better at dodging bullets, I have not yet taken any damage in the four rooms I have cleared, which is a first so far. I remain hopeful of finding a chest room soon that will give me a better gun.

I eventually find a big fancy chest and open it with my key to reveal something I have not seen yet.

It is called the thunderclap and the almanac explains it is one of the first energy weapons to enter the gungeon, created basically by sheer dumb luck of a lightning strike. The first few shots of it have me liking it already, I look forward to seeing the results.

after moving through a room that seemed to be shaped to resemble a tank, and absolutely eviscerating the bulletkin in it with my new energy weapon, I come across a chest room but am keyless, so I move on to find the boss room.

I don’t know whether the shape of the room is intentional or not.

While searching for the boss I first decide to go to the beefy moustache man’s shop and buy a key to unlock the chest with. In the chest I find a health pack, which I do not yet need as I still have full health by some miracle, but knowing me I swap out my molotovs for it just in case, I don’t really use them anyway, mostly because I forget they’re there.

I find the boss room and come face to face with the Bullet King for the 2nd time, this time I am determined to defeat him, now that I consider myself a bit more skilled than the noob I was when we first met, although there is no mistaking I am still a noob.

I try dodging around like a mad man again, similar to what I did with the gatling bird but sadly it did not work anywhere near as well, one of the reasons could be I am not with the luxary of increased speed like last time, but also that my dive dodging was poorly timed with the King’s more complex bullet formations. I did come very close to killing the Bullet King but alas it is not my time yet and I meet my 7th death. I also realize afterwards I forgot to use my health pack… perhaps if I had remembered I may have won, in-fact I most likely would have won, but oh well.

Starting to feel mild despair I decide to save and quit for a bit. I plan on trying out one of the other characters in my next run.
