I have been getting a little caught up in the start of the Democratic Primary/Caucus season and feel like I have neglected the Labour Leadership Election just a little bit. Note though that the contenders profiles are done and ready to go, I will start releasing them closer to the main ballot (closer to April) and I will likely release Thornberry’s profile later this month. I am finding it hard to get a good timing on dropping the profiles as I want them to be as relevant as possible.
This post won’t be pinned though as most candidates have qualified at this point, Keir Starmer who appears to be the favourite still, is qualified, Rebecca Long-Bailey is also qualified and one of the once underdogs turned popular Lisa Nandy is also qualified for the ballot. These three candidates lay their thanks towards unions and Labour affiliates in enabling them to qualify.
Emily Thornberry on the other hand still require more support to qualify for the ballot and the best bet she has is the CLP nominations, which are a nomination by the decision of a local Labour constituency party. So far according to sources from the CLP Nominations Twitter account, Keir Starmer is far ahead with 154 local constituency Labour party nominations with Long-Bailey following behind with 70. Lisa Nandy sits on 28.
Thornberry only sits on 12 for now but with the other candidates secured there is a likelihood she may get many more nominations from the hundreds of CLPs still yet to declare for a candidate, so there is ample room to secure the 5% of CLPs backing required for the ballot in April. The deadline for qualification is 14th February.
For now it appears Keir Starmer according to many polls and also betting odds is the clear favourite to win, but this still doesn’t make his win a guaranteed thing as it is the Labour Members and others who have paid money to temporarily join and vote, who will decide the outcome, it remains to be seen if this membership will still be skewed towards a Corbyn-like candidate such as Long-Bailey or if they will turn to a more centrist candidate such as Keir Starmer or perhaps they will seek leadership from a newer face, such as Lisa Nandy.
