Some downsides of Apple Devices (But also some upsides) – My Personal Opinion

I have both an Ipad Air and a Sony Xperia phone with years of usage out of both devices and so I will do some certain comparisons, this is my own personal experience and in no way gives a definitive conclusion on what is better or worse, they both have their pros and cons. I got the Sony Xperia way before my Ipad Air and it is in-fact still my first ever phone, although now a days I only use my phone for calls and texts while my Ipad is used for everything else, but I did originally play games and use a lot of other features on the Xperia before getting the Ipad.

First, I want to talk about the chargers. It is my firm opinion that Android devices are by far superior in their charger plugs and cables on average, sure they may often get an F on the design phase but on the engineering and longevity scale they get a 10/10 basically, the charger to my phone is still the original one and shows no signs of breaking, the only one downside is that the wire connects to the side of the plug so it can make it that you are unable to easily fit it in without some maneuvering of other plugs, but that’s more a design flaw of the specific manufacturer than a common trait of such devices as a whole, so doesn’t really count as many other chargers for Android devices aren’t like that.

My Ipad charger on the other hand, the plug is perfectly fine but the cable and lightning connecter at the end has broken on numerous occasions, three occasions to be exact I am now on my 3rd charger either due to the wire splitting open or the connecter cracking due to general ware and tare. The thing is that the wire is small and a lot more delicate than the typical android charger’s more bulky and durable wire, now this may make the Ipad charger look better but it is trading better looks for a shorter average lifespan… sure some people get lucky and never have their Apple charger go and break, but that’s not my experience.

Now this is where I go into the part where Android is much more adaptable compared to Apple devices, if something of an Android device breaks you can easily replace it with a wide variety of different accessories or chargers that will work perfectly fine with the phone, this is also the case for replacing parts to fix the Android device and it is much cheaper.

Meanwhile for Apple devices you basically have or should buy only Apple’s own manufactured accessories and chargers as otherwise if you use a cheaper 3rd party alternative instead there is the increased risk of it damaging your Apple device (this happened to my mum’s iPhone when she used a 3rd party charger, it made her phone start acting all jumpy). Now the only problem with this are that Apple’s stuff are much more expensive to replace, compared to Android where you get a good choice of a variety of manufacturers chargers and accessories that are safely and easily adaptable with the Android device, not at all the case for Apple devices.

So, since their chargers can break more easily this can be highly annoying to your pocket. Apple’s earphones were originally an exception, the headjack is widely adaptable but as we know by now, they have since removed the headjack input and gone all out with their lightning input… which isn’t adaptable and on top of that they stopped selling the earphones with the headjack. My current Ipad only has one lightning input so it means if it is charging, I won’t be able to use earphones, all the Apple earphones I have left either only have audio working in one earphone or the audio is greatly decreased on one side than the other and I am unable to replace it unless I buy one with a lightning connecter and as said I do not trust using 3rd party earphones with a headjack on my Ipad.

Next up is the fact my Home button on my Ipad has become stiff, it is hard to push in and it often becomes stuck in, so it would appear again in this instance Apple may have gone for design rather than longevity as I have not had this problem with any buttons on my phone. Of course, there is a setting that you can activate to have a virtual home button on the screen to get around this but it is still very annoying, as well as the virtual button generally getting in the way from time to time.

Right now it probably sounds like I am heavily trashing Apple and yeah, I kind of am, which is the point of this post, but that’s just my general experience. But I think where Apple does excel in is the tablet technology overall, not so much the phones where I believe Android is the winner in, now this is probably biased since I haven’t had an iPhone but I have witnessed my mum’s iPhone over many years and I know their general features and specs… also the same on the tablet front, not having an Android one. With Apple you can generally be guaranteed the tablet will be of good quality.

That isn’t to say there aren’t any good Android or other tablet devices out there, there certainly are and they are also getting better, but Apple is certainly still the leader on this front. So all in all my personal opinion is that I prefer Apple Tablets and Android Phones. This clearly isn’t a comprehensive review and it should not be used as a guide for what you plan to buy, this is just my personal experience and if you are looking for guidance on what to buy (either Android or Apple) there are actual good and comprehensive guides out there of people who have much more experience with the devices.

Also, when I talk about Android devices, I am not specifically talking about the operating system, it is just my colloquial term for all non-Apple devices as Apple really likes to set itself apart from all the mingling. There are of course other systems outside of just iOS/Android (such as the Fire OS, which is based on the Android OS anyway). Android and iOS are the most popular OS’s.

Something that also really interests me lately is that Apple’s tablets now run on their own operating system separate from iOS, called quite simply IpadOS, and I am looking forward to see how they diverge the two systems in the future, it certainly I think gives them more opportunity to develop the operations of their tablets.

This is nothing more than a little Friday ramble, not to be taken super seriously, but to simply just give my personal experience and thoughts.
