Netflix Binge Fest Reviews #1

Hey all. Something I thought I would start doing now and again for this blog are short non-complex reviews of the shows I am currently watching on Netflix, the reviews will be done based on the overral-factor rather than a season by season basis, although when new seasons are released for any Netflix shows I have already reviewed previously I may come back to it with a new review focused specifically on the new season. It is just a little something to perhaps help you find something you may want to watch on Netflix, something you could not find or something you were not sure about watching but just be warned that these reviews will not be 100% spoiler free but I will do my best to obscure specific details as much as possible.

NOTE: Upon this posts release not all of these shows may still be streamed on Netflix it just depends on when this post was posted and/or when you started reading it.

Salvation

Salvation is a show about a planet-killing asteroid that is barreling towards the Earth and the plot-line follows a number of characters vying in ways to prevent it. I’d say the show starts off on a low and begins to pick up as you watch more of the episodes so it may take you a little while to get into it but eventually the show does take off and you MAY be drawn in enough to be wanting to put on the next episode and binge, although it may still be too silly of a show for you, for me this is the kind of show that you either like or don’t like.

Character development is pretty good in the show. The show does have a number of cliques, character romantic relationship problems and outside of character development the old Cold War enemy Russia comes into the picture at some point to top it off and also certain fight scenes where the “good characters” win are mostly unrealistic, but ignoring those things the show is no where near over-clique and is perfectly watchable and the acting is plenty good enough to keep it real enough.

The show going on does become more and more political moving from events happening in the Pentagon to events happening at the White House and also internationally.

There are several plot twists in the show as well that keeps it pretty exciting but overral I would not say the show makes you want to jump straight to the next episode like some shows I watch can do, but that is not a bad thing, just view it as the show will last longer, I’ve found myself watching 1-2 episodes a day compared to just binging them like many other shows, although saying that, close to the end of season 1 I begun to get much more into it and tempted to watch more episodes at once.

I would definitely say that if you like action and politics then this is the show for you, it is worth giving it a shot but you need to give the show a chance to develop before decinding if you like it or not, season 2 is left on a strange cliff-hanger so if you watch to the end it will leave you very much thinking what will happen in the next season.

Haunted

This program is not for the faint of heart or those who wish to sleep comfortably at night, the show each episode focuses on an individual or a number of people talking about their horrifying apparently real life encounters with the worst of the paranormal world and as they tell it many scenes and special effects are used to re-create key moments keeping you at the edge of your seat and very disturbed, a perfect show to watch for the Halloween season.

A few of the episodes I did find to be a little slow and bland at certain points but overral the more terrifying episodes take the cake of the show and if you are a one for the paranormal and are interested in hearing stories about the paranormal you would not have heard before then this show I would definitely recommend to you, there are only 7 episodes anyways.

Designated Survivor

If you are one for politics or more so if you are one of the many who enjoyed the House of Cards Netflix series then this may be something else you’d be interested in. The show starts off after the US Capitol is blown up by a huge explosion and kills all congress members, the President and Vice-President where in the “Designated Survivor” has to take over as President and then there after goes after the culprits following a large conspiracy while fixing up government, after that though on the next season the show becomes much more political and many of the episodes could be considered stand-alone with a few small plots leading off from them into the next episodes. The show also brings in a number of “SJW” quirks that some viewers may be annoyed or put off by.

Season 1 was definitely the star of the show and Season 2 for many was a let down and yes I agree that season 2 was not anywhere near as good as season 1 but I would not say it was completely un-watchable, there were a number of fairly good episodes mixed in with the bland and drawn out episodes. The thing also is that each season has just over 20 episodes, after season 2 the show was cancelled but has since been taken up by Netflix for a season 3 where 10 episodes have been ordered, perhaps for a more lighter and action packed season to fix up the show. I think the main mistake was pretty much wrapping up the main story line of solving the Capitol explosion conspiracy too soon and should have been extended through a number of seasons, the writing in many episodes was also abysmal in season 2 at certain points.

So all though it won’t live up to the political twists and dark conspiricies of House of Cards it still has a chance to revive itself yet with a season 3 being chanced by Netflix. I’d say give it a go for season 1 at least.

The Haunting of Hill House

Me and my sister watched this together since she is a fan of paranormal stuff, we also watched the Haunted program together as well. The Haunting of Hill House was not what I expected it to be from the get go, but it is not bad, but it does have a complex storyline that may be difficult to follow if you don’t pay enough attention to each episode, the episodes jump forward and backwards to different timelines of each character frequently which adds to complexity, but the more you watch the more the episodes wrap up together and start to make more sense.

I did not find it to be that scary and I was mostly just got by jump scares they throw in, which is a little disapointing but nonetheless the storyline and acting is excellent and that alone makes it good enough to watch but I would describe the show as more of a Thriller rather than a full on Horror TV show, in my experience it does not keep you up at night, but maybe that is just me, I am fairly hard to scare.

The show does leave you wanting more after each episode as you want to know how “The Last Night” came down to happening and when you watch the show you will understand what I mean. So don’t hesitate and give it a go!
