The Annoying Droning-Humming Sound

Where I live every now and again so far this year there has been this very annoying noise that goes on for a few days and then stops maybe for a few weeks or months, and then out of the blue it will start up for a few days all over again. And right now, it is ongoing and it feels like it is the worst phase so far of this noise. A noise that is certainly emanating from the nearby seaport, some kind of machinery or mechanical noise, and it is often at its worst throughout the entire night.

This unfortunately can make it difficult to sleep and I will need to put in some ear plugs/buds to block out the noise as it is so aggravating and distracting, but what’s worse is not everyone can hear it, and it is a strange noise, because you could literally move like a centimeter in your home and it’d mean the difference between hearing the noise or not, or making it louder or quieter, simply just turning my head to face a different direction can change the loudness or whether I can hear it or not.

I guess you can call it The Hum, the mysterious noise that happens and is reported around the world and of which it’s source can be hard to trace, and it’s no wonder if the noise like it is now acts so strangely. Shutting windows and doors makes very little if any difference to the sound as it seems to just phase through many things, even wearing ear buds and plugs doesn’t fully block out the noise either.

Since I have Autism, my hearing is a lot more sensitive as well so it’s likely I can hear it worse than many other people, and it can almost hurt my ears at times as well when it really decides to pick up randomly, droning upwards and then back down again, it seems to do that in a wavy motion, up and then down, up and then down, up and then down. It is quite maddening. But it is certainly coming from the seaport, I live in a town which has two major seaports nearby to it.

But this noise is certainly a new thing, as I said it has only started this year, and it usually lasts a few days as I said, then stops for a long period, then resumes for a few days, and repeat, repeat, repeat. You would really think it’d just perhaps stop during the night at least, but I guess that obviously ports are 24/7 things, but at least that section of work could be halted for the night time so it doesn’t disrupt people’s sleep.

Sadly, it only seems to be me that it is disrupting anyway, I could try moving my bed somewhere else in the room, although I think that would only make very minimal difference, as the sound seems to also change places as well of where you can or cannot hear it within a room. It can get my anxiety going when I am afraid that I may not be able to fall asleep due to the sound keeping me awake.

There’s not really much that can be done about it, it’s a common problem I have discovered, humming and droning sounds are often complained about in many, many different places across the world. Like I said earlier, it’s collectively known as The Hum, and generally the source cannot always be determined, although now and again it is eventually determined after enough people complain and the local authority conducts an investigation. Although I doubt that will happen in my current case as no one else seems to be bothered by it.

It’s very unfortunate though when the sound can never ever be determined and you just have to live with it forever, like the Taos Hum for example. And just the fact that not everyone can hear it can make it very isolating and even more frustrating to deal with. You do also wonder how it can go on non-stop for such a number of days, you’d think there would be more stops than that, or maybe that’s me just wishing and hoping.

I just want some peace and quiet and a nice comfortable sleep. Usually I can sleep comfortably, but not while this is going on. I have always lived with a ringing sound in my ear, which is very similar sounding to static, and I actually find comfort in that sound and it doesn’t bother me, and right now I wish that it could act as a white noise to mask over the droning/humming, but sadly it isn’t. Also, the fact that the droning/humming sound seems worse than it has been before worries me as well. I really hope it stops soon and hopefully one day it stops for good because this was never a problem until this year, and I’ve lived at the current house I live at for many, many years now, longer than any other place I’ve lived at so far. I can’t really think what would have changed at the seaport to make this begin, but clearly something has.

Maybe if it keeps up, I’ll try having the radio on quietly or bring a fan down to have on to see if it can mask the noise, or something like that.

Have you ever been bothered by an annoying sound that you were unable to do anything about?

In Other News…

I am currently working on a new series but it’s going to take a while due to multiple factors. 1. I’m still trying to at least have blogs up here for Monday’s Tuesday’s, and Thursday’s, so that is some time taken out, I would also have a post up on each Friday but so far I just haven’t had the time.

Reason I don’t have much time is I am fitting time in with a social worker to learn independent skills, and I also started doing an Autism Anglia zoom workshop, and I will also soon be starting a Prince’s Trust workshop as well. So there is the case of finding time for my larger blogging projects, as well as working on my novel on Wednesday’s, so I don’t blog on those days.

But at some point my next large blogging project will begin being released. It’s going to be a series relating to the Armed Forces of each Commonwealth member state, focusing on one country at a time, and just going through manpower, weapons, vehicles and so on. You’ll properly see what it’s about once it is released. I am enjoying making it so far.

So please stick around! Thank you.
