The Weekly Update #8 – Sometimes the Obstacles Suddenly Clear

Alright, so first of all I apologise there was no blogpost yesterday but I simply did not have time – but the reason I had no time is a good reason.

Luckily I have been able to get back on to the Programming Course that was originally up in the air. ServiceNow have thankfully accepted those of us back who were temporarily kicked off of the course due to the business policy conflict.

This is great news for all involved as now they and I do not have to settle for less. So, I have been having a good time this week back on the course and have managed to fully catch up on the few bits I ended up missing.

I also got a micro-certification on ServiceNow’s Flow Designer which I cannot stress enough is really, really cool and fun to use.

Now I call it the “Programming Course” but the course is actually about learning ServiceNow’s applications and modules within lab instances, including one we get to keep forever which is really cool! So, there is a lot of low-code/no-code, which is ServiceNow lingo of ways of creating things without actually needing to code/program/script anything (Flow Designer and App Engine are really good examples of this).

Of course though there are options for scripting and coding to make it even more custom and add even more complex operations. And the course dedicates a week to learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript – 9-5 each day like all of the course across the 9/10 weeks.

This week has largely been on-demand studying on ServiceNow’s Now learning platform. Quite a lot of reading, and also some labs to complete things in. Today was the final project of creating our own catalog item (for the Service Catalog application) and applying our own created flow to it created in the flow designer application.

So my flow was something like > trigger = service catalog item requested > action = update request record > action = ask for approval > then add in some If logic, so if approved update record accordingly, create catalog tasks for configuration and delivery… send email about approval and delivery time, update request record to closed complete and so on – OR if rejected the if logic is ignored and so action = send email about such rejection and action = update record to closed incomplete.

You can look up some videos on youtube to get a better understanding of what I am going on about above, if interested.

So yeah. It has been a lot of fun, a lot of hard work, a little bit of stress – but overcoming such stress when figuring things out and learning.

Goodbye Internet Explorer

If you have not seen the news lately… Microsoft is finally bringing an end to any future for Internet Explorer and it will just become a legacy browser now relegated to older computers and kept for certain development reasons elsewhere.

To me this is quite significant as it was the first ever browser I used before it got knocked off its pedastal by more advanced browsers like Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari. And even after it got the stigma of being the crappiest browser around I still stuck with it longer than many others before finally switching to Google Chrome – which was indeed much better for my browser gaming of the past (I still miss the flash era so much! Ah, simpler times).

But I guess it was inevitable with Microsoft having launched its Edge successor in 2015, which is indeed much better than Internet Explorer both aesthetically and operationally. Although I have still chosen to stick with Google Chrome because I am stubborn like that just like how I used to be stubborn with Internet Explorer, it is a trait of Autism too – not liking to change things.

It is not much of a surprise that Microsoft created a whole new browser from the ground up – looking into it operationally it was a good decision rather than wasting time playing catch up with Internet Explorer – and let’s not forget the long ongoing stigma attached to IE as well, creating a new browser with a new name gets away from that too.

But yes, when I heard the news that Internet Explorer was finally being retired it still hit me in the nostalgia feels, thinking back to my much freer childhood. It is indeed the end of an era.

So Now What?

Well. I am still going to try my best to get blogposts up on Thursday’s – but as seen it simply is not always going to be feasible. Expect bullet-point style candidate analysis following the outcome of US primaries, that is the main thing I am working on, hopefully I can pick up the pace on it from August and release them much faster as currently the rate is obviously not sustainable and the Midterms will be long gone by the time they are all finished.

And I shall be making sure to at least be putting up Weekly Updates on Friday’s.

Have a great weekend!
